Kinsey Cottage

In 1971, the Christchurch branch was involved in project of Heroic Age interest ‹ the preservation of a cottage from the property of Sir Joseph Kinsey, New Zealand agent for Scott and Shackleton.

Kinsey died in 1936 and in 1971 his house, at 99 Papanui Road, was sold to make way for a block of motels.

Three weeks before the site was to be cleared the branch acquired the cottage and arranged for its removal to Ferrymead, the historical park near Christchurch, where it now stands. The branch raised over $300 to meet removal costs for the cottage, which contained a darkroom believed to have been used by Herbert Ponting, Scottıs photographer.
