New Zealand Antarctic Society (Incorporated)

The New Zealand Antarctic Society was formed in 1933 and has 3 branches in New Zealand as well as an international membership.

The Society brings together people interested in Antarctica, to share knowledge in the fields of all sciences, exploration, discovery and mapping of Antarctica, to seek protection of the Antarctic environment, and to promote New Zealand's interests in Antarctica.

It is the only Antarctic organisation in the world to publish a full colour, magazine-style, quarterly publication (Antarctic) summarising international Antarctic events.

                            Editor - Antarctic

Antarctic is the flagship publication of The New Zealand Antarctic Society, and is currently published four times a year, to a worldwide readership.

Our publication is looking for a new editor.

An ability to develop the magazine's 'online presence' is important. A knowledge of Antarctica, and wide contacts/networks within the Antarctic community both here in New Zealand and Overseas would be useful.

Some writing is required, and as Editor you would be responsible for gathering or commissioning articles from contributors, preparing them for publication and liaising with the magazine's designers.

This is an unpaid position.

Expressions of interest are requested by 5 January 2015 to for an immediate start.

We have a very wide and varied membership. At its core are people who have first hand experience of Antarctica, including Old Antarctic Explorers (OAEs) from the earliest days of New Zealand, American, British and Australian exploration.

Others are people who have travelled to Antarctica more recently, some on tour ships. The remaining membership is made up of people who have a deep interest in Antarctica, often through related interests.

Quite a high proportion of our membership live outside New Zealand, and many are libraries that find our magazine has a valuable coverage of Antarctic affairs.

Membership entitles you to:
  • Antarctic, our magazine which is published in March, June, September and December each year.
  • Newsletters.
  • Discounted rates on books published by the Society.
