The New Zealand Antarctic Society was formed in 1933 and has 3 branches in New Zealand as well as an international membership.
The Society brings together people interested in Antarctica, to share knowledge in the fields of all sciences, exploration, discovery and mapping of Antarctica, to seek protection of the Antarctic environment, and to promote New Zealand's interests in Antarctica.
It is the only Antarctic organisation in the world to publish a full colour, magazine-style, quarterly publication (Antarctic) summarising international Antarctic events.
We have a very wide and varied membership. At its core are people who have first hand experience of Antarctica, including Old Antarctic Explorers (OAEs) from the earliest days of New Zealand, American, British and Australian exploration.
Others are people who have travelled to Antarctica more recently, some on tour ships. The remaining membership is made up of people who have a deep interest in Antarctica, often through related interests.
Quite a high proportion of our membership live outside New Zealand, and many are libraries that find our magazine has a valuable coverage of Antarctic affairs.
Membership entitles you to:
Antarctic, our magazine which is published in March, June, September and December each year.
Discounted rates on books published by the Society.

John Richard Claydon (1917-2014), Wing Commander (retired), AFC, Polar Medal

New publication - Dogs of the Vastness
A beautifully illustrated book has been commissioned by the NZAS Canterbury Branch to complement the bronze sled dog to be installed in Lyttelton. Both celebrate 125 years of direct links between Lyttelton and Antarctica. The book will appeal to both children and adults and encourages questions. It tells a story from a sled dog's point of view as the dog learns about the adventure ahead, interspersed with historical anecdotes and photos of Lyttelton's links with the Antarctic from 1900-2014. All proceeds of this not-for-profit book go to Society projects. An order form can be downloaded here...
